Dance Education

As dance is often part of the PE department and often without a specialist, Muraldo DC. offers the opportunity to use our teachers to help explore this area of study. Dance is surprisingly versatile in it application to the variety of subjects taught is school today, and its ability to aid students to understand a wide variety of topics – teaching from one off workshops to longer courses including residencies according to requirement.

While the application of dance to some subjects are obvious, others may not be immediately apparent, For example, Muraldo DC is currently of the process of developing a teaching package that combines the learning of maths with dance. How better to promote the understanding of intangible concepts that to physically create them? Remember too, that traditional dances are reposits of a wealth of historical and social information about the culture and values in which they were developed.

Many schools endeavour to gear all the subjects within a term to highlight a particular topic or theme, we can either as an integral part of your term project or totally independent, provide appropriate dance work, i.e.

1] Authentic dances from the period of the project e.g. Tudors, Dances danced in England during war years etc

2] Dance from particular period, culture or country

3] Creative dances produced from the student’s own movement ideas around topic

4] Dances, which explore specific issues

5] Dances, which specifically explore and teach Christian principles

6] introduce and explore basic concepts of choreography

7] GCSE dance – This work will be developed around the requirements of the national curriculum

In the case of nos. 1 & 2 the company has access to a network of information resources will enables them to fully research any dance topic the company undertakes. Should however, in the unlikely event that the company does not have or cannot find the information needed to teach a particular dance, you will be informed and alternatives if possible, will be explored, as the company will not teach any dance unless it is certain about the information it is giving out.

To use dance to teach all aspects of education is far from new. Many other cultures where dance is central to all social activity, have taken advantage of this resource for generations. Dance not only helps to support the understanding of specific topics but its very nature helps students to develop;

  • Co-ordination
  • Rhythmic skills
  • Body awareness
  • Awareness of others
  • Observation skills
  • Concentration
  • Interpretation
  • Decision making communication
  • Initiative
  • Listening ability
  • Imagination
  • Problems solving
  • Channels energy in a constructive way
  • Encourages interaction
  • Encourages critical appreciation of self and others
  • Encourages confidence
  • Encourages enjoyment

Dance is often not recognised for its potential to develop and aid students during the process of learning. The school curriculum is dominated with discursive subjects, which are seen as the most valuable, and yet dance along with the arts in general, has so much to offer as we have seen.

Dance, like any other medium, can only convey a limited amount of information according to its nature however, when imaginatively applied dance can be a very effective tool in the world of education.

The teachers of Muraldo D.C are all professionally trained dancers who have had specific training in the teaching of dance. Each of our dancers is experienced in the teaching of dance to all age groups and therefore utilise the special skills needed for each.

As very little is taught about the rich heritage of Caribbean dance in this country, we have taken special interest in this area and utilising a selection of basic African-Caribbean dance chararacteristics to create specialist workshops for all age groups.
