Africanistic Movement

An Introduction to Africanistic Movement

This class studies widely recognised characteristic ways of moving and articulating the body, which are contrary to European dance traditions such as polyrhythmic, poly-dynamic and polycentric movement, yet common to the wealth cultures of Africa and of African heritage. Utilising vocabulary taken from West, Central, South Africa and the African-Caribbean.

The aim of this unique class has been developed to bridge the gap of physical understanding between European dance movement characteristics and those of African heritage. The class offers the opportunity to gain a firm grounding on which to build the physical study of the myriad dance traditions of African heritage.

Utilising her own experience and understanding of African and Caribbean dance traditions along with her formal training in Contemporary and Classical Ballet along with focussing on the basic foundational characteristics common to dances of African heritage but contrary to those of European traditions, Caroline had developed a course which is the first of its kind in Europe.

She has further developed her work into a three year module for the Dance and Culture BA degree at Surrey University where Caroline was an associate lecturer from 1999 to 2006. She is continuing her work at the University of Ulster.
