Aims of Quadfest
a) To encourage the linking up of Quadrille groups whatever their location, to share a common interest. Currently, these groups normally work in isolation from each other;
b) To enourage contact between all age groups to contribute to a sense of community;
c) To build up awareness of Caribbean culture with a special emphasis on Caribbean dance and music;
d) To utilize this opportunity to also provide a platform for other Caribbean performing arts, wth a special emphasis on the Caribbean’s rich heritage of traditional dance, of which little is known is this country;
e) To involve ‘live’ music generally and Quadrille music specifically, with a view to encouraging the experience of rapport between musicians and dancers, as this is a major and important feature of black traditional dance.
Objectives of Quadfest
a) To stage this as an annual festival, providing a focus for the year’s activities;
b) To hold a Quadrille competition within the festival;
c) To furnish constructive and encouraging feedback on each group’s performance as a means of developing the presentation of their work;
d) To hold seminars, workshops and exhibitions with a view to generating a deeper understanding of the history and significance of Quadrille dance specifically, and traditional Caribbean dance in general;
e) To search out and contact as many Quadrille groups as possible, thereby involving within the project, the Caribbean community from a wide range of areas and locations;
f) To include child performers;
g) To actively encourage the participation of men. This proves to be a problem for most Quadrille groups, which needs special attention;
h) To encourage the contribution of skills from professional dancers and musicians;
i) To involve members of the host and other ethnic communities where they can contribute to the understanding of Caribbean culture, eg the performance of European Quadrille groups
j) To maintain links with the participating groups throughout the year and involving them in other projects where possible;
k) To provide classes for all ages of the community and further training if required by the competitors using the raised profile that Quadfest would bring for Caribbean Quadrille.
